Every year on June 12, Filipinos across the globe unite in celebration of a defining moment in the nation's history — Philippine Independence Day. This day marks the country's declaration of independence from over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule, proclaimed in 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite.

In 1962, then-President Diosdado Macapagal officially moved the celebration of Philippine Independence from July 4 to June 12, affirming the importance of the original declaration in Kawit and honoring Filipino-led efforts toward freedom.
Across the country, the day is marked with flag-raising ceremonies, parades, fireworks displays, and cultural programs. Government offices, schools, and communities organize events that showcase Filipino history, traditional music and dances, local cuisine, and national pride.
